Acacia: Tills döden skiljer oss åt
17/08/13 || sincan
What we have here is the first album by Acacia (a band previously called Livsnekad). The album is named “Tills döden skiljer oss åt” which can be translated into “Till death do us part” while using a more international language compared to Swedish. The music is not that easy to by words describe what genre it can be classified as without getting longwinded, which I soon might be. What they do is playing a crossover between genres such as black metal, post metal, doom, depressive rock and some death metal as well. The atmosphere is rather depressed, yet beautiful, and not that ugly one might expect while having in mind that one of the brains in this band is Christian Larsson, the current bassist player in infamous Shining.
This music is not the perfect one while playing beer pong with your friends (i.e. parents) or similar but it should more be seen as something for the times when you’re alone and just feel like absorbing some powerful, slow, sometimes epic, fine piece of music in the veins of bands such like for instance Drudkh and Alcest but with a slower and cleaner sound, I think I will add modern as well there (not to be confused with “bad”). I really appreciate the usage of the piano, this since pianos are brvtal as fvck when handled in a nice manner (not to be confused with Finnish synthesizers).
The album itself consists of five tracks which each are relatively long and the album ends after about one hour, thus being relatively long. At one hand the tracks need their long time and space, on the other hand they sometimes tend to blur into each other since the tracks often are relatively similar (slow and repetitive), but with many interesting elements completely differentiating them from each other. There are these details which really makes this into a successful album, details such as; the earlier mentioned piano; some clean male or female vocals filled with emotions; the fast sonic explosions one encounters.
I appreciate that the lyrics are mostly in Swedish, I tend to like Swedish lyrics in general, this since it often fits emotional music (fact). But don’t be afraid if you don’t speak Swedish since this will most likely not be a barrier which ruins the experience for you.
Finally I would recommend you who read this to check them out (the album can be streamed at their bandcamp site) and if you don’t feel anything while listening to Acacia you have most likely about zero contact with your emotions and should, if so, bang your head against a concrete wall until the wall is demolished (and yes even you who appreciate Acacia can try this).
